High Court Justice Md Rezaul Hasan Resigns Citing Personal Reasons
Justice Md Rezaul Hasan of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has submitted his resignation to the President, citing personal reasons.
The resignation letter was sent to the President on Monday through the Supreme Court administration. Supreme Court Registrar General Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddiqi confirmed the development to Prothom Alo on Tuesday. He said Justice Rezaul Hasan submitted the letter through the Chief Justice, following official procedure.
At the time of his resignation, proceedings against him were underway in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
Background of the Complaint In November last year (24 November), Shah Group Chairman KM Mozibul Haque filed a complaint with the Supreme Court Registrar General, requesting an investigation into Justice Rezaul Hasan by the Supreme Judicial Council. The allegations included biased conduct in two company-related cases from 2010 and 2011, as well as acquiring assets through alleged corruption.
Justice Rezaul Hasan submitted a written statement in response to the complaint on 10 December. On 29 March, he submitted another application to the Supreme Judicial Council, arguing that the complaint was not maintainable. He reportedly stated that if there were any allegations, the complainant could have raised them in 2017 when relief was granted in one of the cases to the complainant’s wife. Sources said his application was later returned.
According to judicial sources, formal proceedings in the Supreme Judicial Council against Justice Rezaul Hasan had not yet begun.
Professional Background Justice Md Rezaul Hasan obtained his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka. He enrolled as an advocate of the District Court in 1985, the High Court Division in 1989, and the Supreme Court in 2004. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court Division on 30 June 2009 and confirmed as a permanent Judge on 6 June 2011.
